Container Gardens

The Potting Shed
The Potting Bench and Shed has been newly created. We encourage our customers to bring their own cherished pots or containers - fill them with our commercial grade soil mix and plant with plants gathered from our seven greenhouses. An instant garden that you can carry home with you. Or Maplewood can fill your containers for you so you can take that off your list.
You do or we do.

Annuals:
Geraniums, especially ivy-leaf or trailing: combine with petunias, blue scaveola, and ivy for lots of color in full sun. Try white geraniums with white petunias and ivy for a refreshing cool look. Zinnias: try yellow zinnias, golden marjoram, yellow gazanias and creeping zinnias. This color scheme is warm and intense. Zinnias also combine well with petunias, portulaca, vinca, and -many other annuals in full sun. For shady spots, try this combination: caladiums, sword fern, ivy, and impatiens make any shady corner brighter.

Vegetables:
Try a salad garden in a balcony box. Center it with onions, surrounded with leaf lettuce and edged with radishes. Plant an herb garden in a large container near the kitchen door for instant flavoring. Try basil in the center, surrounded by sage, french tarragon, rosemary, or other personal favorites.

Design Tips:
1.) Container planting should always aim at the senses, with color, fragrance, and texture.

2.) Consider your backdrop when selecting containers. Will the color and texture of the container work well in your setting?

3.) Several containers grouped together will be more effective than one lone pot.

4.) Always use plants of varying heights to create a sense of movement. Stagger plants, especially in window boxes, for a more natural look.

5.) Try to keep plants in scale with the container. For window boxes, keep plants in scale with the window or other surroundings.

6.) Consider using a focal point, such as a small evergreen, in a pot surrounding it with colorful accents.

7.) Remember, the elements are definitely harsher on container plantings but an the flip side, you do have more control over the soil, water, food, and placement regarding sun, shade, and wind.
